My name is Elizabeth Selina Stewart Smith, P.E. I am a native Houstonian, I am a graduate of Jefferson Davis Senior High School, class of 1975, Spelman College, and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, class of 1981. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from Spelman and a Bachelor, Mechanical Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. In 1981, I began my career at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Wright Aeronautical Laboratory, as a research engineer in cryogenic research. While I was there I worked as an engineer intern.

I left Wright-Patterson and began my tenure at NASA, Johnson Space Center in April 1982, in the Plant Engineering Division as an engineer intern. As a member of the Controlled Mode Facilities Project Team, NASA Engineers that were responsible for the Design and Construction of modifications of several building in support of DoD missions, I was awarded a Group Achievement Award. I successfully completed my internship in 1984.

I volunteered for the Space Station Program Office in 1985, and was selected and placed in the Configuration Analysis Branch of the System Synthesis Office in the System Engineering and Integration (SE&I) Division. I designed computer-aided models for use as analysis tools (CAD/CAE) for Space Station Vehicle Design activities. During my tenure in the Program Office, I was promoted to the GS-12 level as a journeyman level engineer, and received an Outstanding Performance Award, and Sustained Superior Performance Award.

When the Program Office was moved to Reston in 1987, by congressional mandate, I was transferred into the Johnson Space Center's WP-2 Space Station Projects Office. I immediately became a team member of the Work Package 2 RFP Evaluation and Fact-finding Activities. I was featured as a Space Station Engineer in the fall 1988 publication of the National Technical Association "Journal". In August 1988, I was promoted to the GS-13 project engineer level.

I authored a paper entitled "Space Station Freedom Configuration" and presented it at the National Technical Association Regional Meeting (Houston) and National Convention (Atlanta). My paper was subsequently published in the National Technical Association "Journal" in the fall of 1990.

In early 1991, I was assigned as a Team Lead for the PIT Documentation Team and a Team Member of the PIT Configuration Team. In August of 1991, I was promoted to the GS-14 senior project engineer level; I also received a Sustained Superior Performance Award.

In October 1993, I became registered in the State of Texas as a Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.)

In November 1993 the Space Station Program made yet another transition. This time the Project offices were closed and all NASA personnel were reassigned. I applied for a position in the program office, and in January 1994, my application was accepted. I was promoted to the GS-15 Technical Manager level. I accepted at position in the Launch Package/Stage Team 2 as the Integration Manager. This team has the responsibility of building the Node 1, Node 2, Pressurized Mating Adapter 1, and 2, and the responsibility of launching the first United States launch package (Flight 2A), which began the U.S. assembly phase of the International Space Station. I have also negotiated international agreements for the Node 2 regarding interfaces with Japan, and the European Space Agency.

After working on the 2A flight I worked as the Technical Integration Manager for the Mission Integration Office Manager. I was responsible for Technical Management Reporting, Contractor Evaluations, and the KSC budget oversight. In 1998, I was appointed as the Program Schedules Manager of the Program Integration Office in the International Space Station Program Office at Johnson Space Center. I developed and managed an integrated schedule tracking and management process for the Space Station Program. I served in that capacity until October, 2003. I am currently the Assistant Manager for the Program Integration Office, in the Space Station Program Office, Johnson Space Center.

I am married to Brian Gregory Smith, President and Owner of Brian Smith Construction Inspection, Inc., and I have two sons, ages 9 and 14.

The Office of Education would like to thank everyone who has shared their time to help build a brighter future.
